BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand)

BOD or Biochemical Oxygen Demand, is an indirect measurement of the amount of dissolved oxygen consumed by microorganisms (such as bacteria) as they break down organic matter in a water sample. This parameter is a primary indicator of the degree of organic pollution in wastewater and surface waters. High BOD levels signify a large quantity of biodegradable organic material, which can lead to oxygen depletion (hypoxia) in water bodies and endanger aquatic life. BOD monitoring is crucial in wastewater treatment facilities to assess the efficiency of the biological decomposition process and ensure the effluent meets environmental regulatory standards before discharge.
